Today is all about the finer things in life. We’ll be visiting Chianti’s most prominent castles and vineyards, and you will have a fantastic opportunity to really get to grips with Chianti’s delectable wines and olive oils. Day 2: Vernaccia of San Gimignano

Today is going to be a white wine day, dedicated to La Vernaccia Tuscan wine.

In the morning, we will drive around the countryside of San Gimignano and Castelvecchio National Park and, along the way, we will have an opportunity to sample stunning wines and delicious food at two of the great wineries that are run by local families.

Vernaccia di San Gimignano stands out among the top wines of Tuscany. Vernaccia-based wine from San Gimignano has a long established history, and throughout the Renaissance period, local Vernaccia was widely considered to be the noblest wine in Italy. Its fame is undoubtedly connected to its region of origin, San Gimignano—an ancient Tuscan town that is famed for its medieval towers. The Vernaccia wine grape is mentioned as early as 1276 in San Gimignano’s records and Dante’s Divine Comedy. Its name is thought to originate from the word vernaculum, which means ‘of the place’ and is the etymological root of the English word ‘vernacular.’

In the afternoon, we will progress to the beautiful village of San Gimignano, where you can have some free time to explore this stunning Tuscan town. San Gimignano  is famous for its fascinating medieval architecture and lofty towers from which visitors can enjoy impressive views of the city from the surrounding valley. At the height of its glory, San Gimignano’s patrician families had built around 72 tower houses as a symbol of their wealth and power. Although only 14 have survived, San Gimignano still retains its feudal atmosphere and magical appearance.

We will end the first day of the tour at a local Tuscan trattoria, where we will enjoy dinner before heading back to the accommodation.

Day 3: Bolgheri and Castagneto Carducci

Today, you will have an opportunity to visit a truly spellbinding area of Italy.

We will commence the day with a short tour of the castle in the village of Bolgheri. We will then continue on our way down through the stunning valley and “avenue of cypress trees” to the first winery of the day. Later, we will drive along the road that connects Bolgheri to Castagneto Carducci, and you will once again have a chance to sit back and enjoy some of the most mesmerizing natural scenery Italy has to offer. Along the way, we will visit two additional wineries, where you will have a chance to tour the cellars and sample the wines. At lunchtime, we’ll enjoy a delicious meal of local Tuscan cuisine.

In the afternoon, we will stop in Castagneto Carducci, and you will be provided with time to stroll leisurely through the village before onward transportation back to your accommodation.

Later that day, your tour manager will return in Florence city and bid you a fond farewell.

Bolgheri, which lies close to the Tyrrhenian Sea on the stunning Tuscan coast south of Livorno, is renowned throughout the world for offering some of the most esteemed vineyards. The winemaking zone of the area encompasses many sloping coastal vineyards, which sit serenely at the foot of the rolling hills that lay between Bolgheri, after which the DOC is named, and southern Castagneto. Also known as ‘the golden oasis of the Maremma,’ Bolgheri was at the heart of the avant-garde movement to bring the Tuscan wine industry back to life. The area’s success is largely attributed to the fad for non-DOC wines and the emergence of the Super Tuscan, one of the most notable of which is the Sassicaia.

The five-kilometer Avenue of Cypress Trees connects the oratory of San Guido with the historical village of Bolgheri in the municipality of Castagneto Carducci. It earned its name from the historic cypress trees that run parallel to the road; however, it is most famous for its inclusion in the Giosuè Carducci’s poem, Davanti San Guido (“In front of San Guido”), in which the trees are described as “tall and proud are they in San Guido in two rows.” A small obelisk sits at the start of the long road. It was placed there in 1908 by Giuseppe della Gherardesca as a mark of respect to Giosuè Carducci, who lived in the area for many years.
