On day one of the tour, your local guide will collect you from the main entrance of the Central Station of Figline Valdarno before whisking you away to your new Tuscan home, a stunning private apartment in a local Tuscan farmhouse.

Upon arrival at your accommodation, you will meet the local family who will prepare for you your first Tuscany dinner. There’s no better way to get familiar with the delicious food of the area and become acquainted with the local people!

Sunday: Vernaccia Wine and San Gimignano

San Gimignano- Vernaccia wineries

Today is going to be a white wine day, dedicated to La Vernaccia Tuscan wine.

In the morning, we will drive around the countryside of San Gimignano and Castelvecchio National Park and, along the way, we will have an opportunity to sample stunning wines and delicious food at two of the great wineries that are run by local families.

Vernaccia di San Gimignano stands out among the top wines of Tuscany. Vernaccia-based wine from San Gimignano has a long established history, and throughout the Renaissance period, local Vernaccia was widely considered to be the noblest wine in Italy. Its fame is undoubtedly connected to its region of origin, San Gimignano—an ancient Tuscan town that is famed for its medieval towers. The Vernaccia wine grape is mentioned as early as 1276 in San Gimignano’s records and Dante’s Divine Comedy. Its name is thought to originate from the word vernaculum, which means ‘of the place’ and is the etymological root of the English word ‘vernacular.’

In the afternoon, we will progress to the beautiful village of San Gimignano, where you can have some free time to explore this stunning Tuscan town. San Gimignano  is famous for its fascinating medieval architecture and lofty towers from which visitors can enjoy impressive views of the city from the surrounding valley. At the height of its glory, San Gimignano’s patrician families had built around 72 tower houses as a symbol of their wealth and power. Although only 14 have survived, San Gimignano still retains its feudal atmosphere and magical appearance.

We will end the first day of the tour at a local Tuscan trattoria, where we will enjoy dinner before heading back to the accommodation.

Monday: Scansano and Montecucco Wine

Morellino di Scansano and Montecucco Wine

Red wines from Maremma in Tuscany are some of the very best Italian wines. This is somewhat unsurprising given that the winemakers of the region have centuries of experience upon which to draw: Wine has been made here since Etruscan times when it was sold across Europe.

After breakfast, we will start making our way to Maremma Toscana. We will stop in San Galgano first and will take in the stunning countryside between Montiano, Magliano in Toscana, and Montecucco, visiting three of the best local wineries and sampling their fine wines along the way. Each of these wineries is run by a local family who has vast experience of producing the authentic and sensational Morellino di Scansano and Montecucco’s wines. We will enjoy a delicious lunch at one of the three local wineries and sample traditional food from Maremma.

We will end the tour in Talamone , a village that is well known for its vibrant nightlife, great food, beautiful landscape, and gelato. We will dinner on the way to return to the accommodation.

Morellino is one of the most well-known Tuscan wines, and its delicious undertones unite the hills from which it comes with the fragrances of the sea. The wine is produced around the valleys of the town of Scansano, where the Sangiovese grape is given the name Morellino, meaning “little dark or brown one.” This is either due to the color of the grape itself, or perhaps the fact that it matches the color of the local breed of horses, the Maremmano.  According to Richard Baudains, chair of the Decanter World Wine Awards, wine lovers who want a true taste of Tuscany should discover the little-known wines of Montecucco. The historic Tuscan DOCs were created in the 1960s; the first DOCGs in the 1980s. Montecucco only formally came into being in 1998. At that time, the producers’ register contained a mere 10 or so names, and the area had barely 100 hectares of vineyard. Every producer has their own story, but they form a cohesive group, with many shared philosophies. A key example of this is the commitment to growing organically, and a high proportion of the top producers in Montecucco practice organic or biodynamic viticulture.

Tuesday: Cooking Class and Siena

Cooking class —-> Siena —>Day off

You have two choices of how to spend the third day of the tour. Keen cooks can enjoy a cooking class with our local chef, with whom you will prepare lunch and enjoy an evening at one of the local village parties. Alternatively, we will take you to the train station from where you can travel to Siena by train. From June to September we will be joining the local villagers as they enjoy their vibrant summer festivals.

Wednesday: Bolgheri and Castagneto Carducci

Bolgheri wine & Carducci

What a stunning area of Tuscany! We will start the day by driving to the village of Bolgheri at which we will enjoy a short visit to the Bolgheri. We will then head down to the valley through the famous “avenue of cypress trees” to reach the first local winery before progressing along the main road that connects Bolgheri to Castagneto Carducci to visit two additional wineries. At each of the wineries, you will have a chance to sample fine wines and visit the cellars.

Having enjoyed a traditional Tuscan lunch at one of the wineries, we will progress to Castagneto Carducci  in the afternoon to visit the village before returning to our accommodation.

Bolgheri, on the Tuscan coast just south of Livorno, is one of Italy’s most prestigious vineyard areas. Its winemaking zone is made up of sloping coastal vineyards at the foot of the hills between the town of Bolgheri, after which this DOC is named, and the southern part of Castagneto. Located in close proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea, it has been described as “the golden oasis of the Maremma.” In the 1960s, the Tuscan wine industry was in need of a shake-up, and Bolgheri became one of the avant-garde areas that helped bring this region back to life. One of the tactics the locals employed was to start a new trend of non-DOC wines and, in 1968, an innovative style of wine emerged that was later dubbed the Super Tuscan. The flagship of the Super Tuscan wine was Sassicaia.

Located in the municipality of Castagneto Carducci, the famous avenue of cypress trees is a five-kilometer stretch of road that connects the oratory of San Guido to the historical village of Bolgheri. It is a long linear road that is flanked by two rows of 2,540 century-old cypress trees. It was built in the 18th century when officials created perpendicular roads along the Via Regio to connect the smaller towns of the surrounding countryside to Bolgheri. The road owes its fame to the memorable verses of Giosuè Carducci in the poem, Davanti San Guido (“In front of San Guido”). The poet lived in the vicinity for many years. At the beginning of the long road, there is a small obelisk, placed there in 1908 by Giuseppe della Gherardesca to commemorate the famed poet.

Thursday: Brunello di Montalcino Vs Nobile di Montepulciano

Montalcino —->Montepulciano

Today, we will visit Montalcino, which is renowned for Brunello di Montalcino, a red wine that is widely regarded as one of the top three red wines in the world. You’ll have an opportunity to learn more about this wine with a visit to one of the region’s most prestigious wineries and cellars. Later, we will visit Montepulciano, a famous medieval village that is replete with Tuscan history and an area of the region that is renowned for its cultural summer festival and fairs.

Our tour will continue with a visit to the city walls, where you’ll have an opportunity to watch skilled tradesmen and women at work using traditional manufacturing techniques to shape copper in their old artisan shops. We’ll also stop by some of the characteristic enoteche (wine shops). The day will end at one of the local Tuscany Trattoria before coming back to the accommodation.

.

Friday: The Chianti Region

Chianti region —> Greve in Chianti

This is most certainly a day for wine enthusiasts! Today, we will get an opportunity to visit the Chianti region of Tuscany, where you’ll tour some of the area’s most notable castles and vineyards and learn the deepest secrets of Chianti’s renowned wines. Our tour might also include a visit to an extra virgin olive producer, where you’ll have a chance to learn more about Tuscany’s olive groves and artisan oils. Having sampled some of Chianti’s famous fare, we will head off to Greve to visit Tuscany’s most renowned butchery and deli. Once you have had the chance to stock up on the area’s high-quality produce, we’ll stop off at a local family-run trattoria, where you will be treated to a delicious Tuscan meal.
