Cortona is an area of natural beauty that the Italians describe as the “Mother of Troy and Grandmother of Rome.” This tour of the sights, sounds, and tastes of this fascinating corner of Tuscany offers you an ideal opportunity to get to grips with this ancient town in the capable hands of a local expert
The tour will commence at Camicia-Cortona. At 10:00 am, you’ll be met by your bilingual tour guide and transported on a journey of discovery through majestic woodland to the fascinating churches and city walls of Cortona.
The day will start with a leisurely 8 km walk through woodland and forests, where you’ll have an opportunity to learn about Cortona’s natural surroundings and the area’s rich history.
At 1:00 pm, we’ll reach the city’s fortress, where you can relax for a while as we take in the spellbinding beauty of the surrounding landscapes. Here, we will enjoy a delicious three-course lunch, wine, and coffee at one of Tuscany’s best Locanda.
Having refueled for the second part of the tour, at 2:30 pm, you’ll be met by a second tour guide who will look after you for the afternoon and lead you on an exciting exploration of some of the area’s most notable landmarks.
Your guide will lead you to Poggio and the Romantic-style church of San Niccolo, a Medieval tower that was constructed in the 15th Century and was home to the Claires Franciscan order, which was founded during St. Francis’ lifetime. You’ll learn all about the long and fascinating history of this building and how it underwent intriguing transformations during the 16th and 17th centuries to become the architectural masterpiece it is today.
We will then progress to take in the sights and sounds of the city’s main square, where we’ll learn more about the history of this magnificent town and have an opportunity to talk to the local producers of the wines, cuisines, and ceramics for which the area has become famous.
We’ll finish the tour at 5:30 pm with a visit to a local jewelry store, where we will enjoy a sparkling Prosecco in a flute made of pure gold or silver leaf as our host teaches us the ancient techniques that the craftsmen use to produce fine metals.
With a rich landscape and vibrant history, Cortona is the ideal location to visit while you’re in Tuscany.
Perfectly positioned 50 miles south of Florence and 130 miles north of Rome, the area’s ancient Etruscan roots can be traced all the way back to the 4th Century BC. On your visit to Cortona, you won’t fail to be captivated by the town’s fascinating history and the beautiful architectural marvels that dot the landscape.
This tour offers you an ideal opportunity to explore Cortona with a local guide who will teach you about the area’s fascinating history, art, and architecture and introduce you to a side of Tuscany you could never have imagined.
